Aleutian Islands Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Survey

Dates: May 2015

Clients/Referring: URS, Gravity Environmental LLC, Sea Vision Underwater Solutions

Description: Island C worked with project partners to deploy side scan sonar and unmanned submersible vehicles in support of a U.S. Navy investigation into World War II-era unexploded ordnance (UXO). Sites surveyed included piers where over-water ordnance handling occurred, gun emplacement sites, and in-water target ranges and bombing ranges.

After conducting transect surveys of each suspected site, the hydrographic survey data was analyzed onboard the Island C and likely targets were identified for further investigation.  Unmanned submersibles (ROV) were then deployed to investigate these targets more closely.  With her advanced navigation systems and excellent maneuverability characteristics owing to her twin screws and large rudders, Island C consistently provided precise maneuvering and station keeping for deployment and retrieval of our clients’ equipment.
