Japan Tsunami Debris

Dates: 2014 – 2016

Clients/Referring: Gulf of Alaska Keeper, Island Trails Network, AK Dept. of Environmental Conservation

Description:  Over four summers from 2013-2016 Island C supported a marine debris clean up by Island Trails Network along 70 miles of the NE Coast of Afognak and the E coast of Shuyak island. To conduct the project, a clean up team of 15 used the Island C and two of her skiffs continuously searching the shoreline, landing wherever possible to remove debris. Marine debris was found at all locations sampled. From 2013 to 2014 a total of 115000 lbs. of debris was removed from Shuyak or Afognak and delivered to Kodiak for recycling.  From 2014-2016 Gulf of Alaska Keeper contracted the Island C to collect and stage for transport an additional 400,000 lbs of marine debris from Kayak island.  A significant portion of the debris is believed to have originated from the 2011 Tohoku tsunami in Japan.
